Flint Water Crisis
Although this may not be a global issue taking up a significant part of our national resources, it is a significant problem that has lasted much too long. This is a big problem for the state of Michigan in that one of our major cities is making it’s residents sick due to contaminated drinking water. This issue has made national news and has been the spotlight for much political debate over the past few years, yet I, growing up a mere 20 minutes from the city and hearing many stories about the issue have never heard of the woman who discovered it all, Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha.
All the news stories that I have watched and read on the topics have covered the issues, the hardships of the residents, and the politicians who are to blame for these problems, but they never seem to give credit to the doctor who was able to determine what was making so many of the local children sick. Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha was able to notice the increased levels of lead in her patients, locate where this lead was coming from, and inform the local residents of the issue and to stop drinking their tap water. She is one of many women scientists in our society today as well as from the past thats work has gone unnoticed and are not given due credit.
